In the pool

Recorded at seven months, when The Boy was at perhaps the peak of his Michelin Man phase. His first time in a wading pool, or sitting upright in any body of water.

A note to new visitors

Matchbook Films came online in summer 2000, but the workflow was relatively onerous and the final products pretty tiny (160x120), so my enthusiasm bogged down a couple of years in.

Today I've got a backlog of footage, a host of new video creation and publishing tools at my disposal, and an incipient videoblogging medium into which I can sidestep.

I'm hoping to post a new video weekly, to add incentive for anyone who likes what they find here to subscribe to the feed.

Some pieces will be plucked from among those I'd previously hosted on the site. I'll do what I can to keep new material in the pipeline.

What you're likely to find here: videos of The Boy, comedic bits, videos of old-time and acoustic musicians performing original compositions or music in the public domain, observational curiosities and found objects. At this point Matchbook Films won't feature much in the way of personal direct-camera address "vlogging," but I may adopt the style for a couple of individual pieces.

Thanks for stopping by.

When I first finished editing this I considered going back in and rotoscoping in the white cord, because it's pretty hard to see with the night vision. That idea lasted about twenty five seconds, before I fell asleep from exhaustion.

Subscribing to Matchbook Films

What you need:

1. A high-speed connection. Because: good luck, otherwise.
2. QuickTime 6 or later (which: if you can view the videos from the website, you've got this installed)
3. FireANT for Windows or Mac OS X. Download it here.
4. The feed address, which is http://feeds.feedburner.com/matchbookfilms

In FireANT, choose "Add Feed", then paste in the feed address above.

The preferences in FireANT can be set to download all videos automatically, overnight (as long as you leave the application open). Of course it comes loaded with several subscription feeds to start with. Consider downloading and watching what's there to see if you like any of them, before deleting feeds from the list.

If you don't set FireANT to download automatically, you'll need to push the "Check Feeds" button to see whether there are any new videos to download.

Easy as cake. Er... piece of pie... um... a torte walk?

Creative liberties

When a video is marked with this stamp, it signifies that I've made use of someone else's copyrighted materials without obtaining their permission. If someone associated with the materials in question believes that my noncommercial videoblogging use is infringing or otherwise doing harm to their copyright, please up and say so. I'm a reasonable man.

Creative commons artists hoping to remix these works do so at their own risk. But it should be pretty obvious what's safe and what's not.

Changing over

It's time for Matchbook Films to enter the 21st century, with video-blogging tools and even: go crazy, RSS syndication for delivery to YOUR desktop.

More soon on how.
