I'll make some tune-up tweaks for next time (e.g. trimming the time between clips from 30 seconds to 25), so suggestions in that regard are welcome. I'm excited about the Lightning Round as a new addition to the evening (I'm glad I nixed the competitive element), and look forward to your future contributions--fifteen seconds or shorter please. Thanks to Warren, Mike, Anne, Tim, and especially Deirdre for leaping in without knowing how it might work. And ok, so I contributed a lot of clips this year (fifteen, plus most of the lightning round). Figure with the new format I'm able to cram more clips into the same amount of time, and I had collected nearly 80 to show and... I'll rein it in a bit next time. Clearly my ramblings about what's "missing" don't affect what people bring. My biggest complaint last year was the absence of 1970s American cinema across all editions of the clip party, and only Tod responded, with the finale of TWO-LANE BLACKTOP. So instead of grumbling any further I'll be making some key upgrades
to my system of positive reinforcement, i.e. the Awards. Details below. Tod came close to an Audience Award hat trick with his clip from Werner Herzog's LESSONS OF DARKNESS, but in the end it was Deirdre who took home the Maltin guide for three mesmerizing minutes from RIVERS AND TIDES, the documentary profile of artist Andy Goldsworthy and his ephemeral works. If there had been an audience referendum for The Montalban (Best Classic Clip), it might have gone to my own clip of Indiana Jones and the golden idol from RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. From the first glimpse of the idol to Belloq's theft of it is just three minutes of ineffably thrilling cinema--one of the best clips I've ever brought to the party, I'd wager. But the award is mine to give (not to take), so it goes instead to Laura S for bringing Scarlett O'Hara wandering through a field of the dying and wounded from GONE WITH THE WIND--if one could compile a list of cinema's most memorable single takes, this crane shot would might sit atop it. (If you can think of one that would beat it, bring it to the next party.) Another audience favorite was Paul's contribution from THE GREAT DICTATOR—Charlie Chaplin's delicate globe dance was a strong contender for both The Montalban and The Teller (Best Wordless Clip). In the end, though I had to give that award to Tim's Dance of the Hours from FANTASIA. The direction and crisp pacing (more impressive with successive viewings) make this clip a standout. Plus: hippo kick line. Matt took home The Baxter (Best Theme, Individual Achievement) for his three clips of double-talking duos (BRAZIL, BULL DURHAM, CRIMSON TIDE). The new onscreen awards wrapup helped to bring this theme into focus--the connection was obscure enough that most everyone missed it. [Brief pause to belatedly award Anne a mini-Baxter for last year's party. Her clips from DOWN WITH LOVE and WHITE CHRISTMAS prominently featured men wearing sock garters--a connection it took me eleven months to realize myself.] It wasn't hard to guess that Christa would win The Jessie (Best Dramatic Clip) for Pippin's elegy for Faramir in THE LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING. This is a tough category--finding a clip that can turn the tone of the evening from light fun or even camp to a more serious emotional state in under three minutes. Glad there are some who keep trying. And finally, Paul retains the What the Hell Was That? award for introducing us to the cinematic open sore that is THE APPLE. I'm still trying to get the smell out of my clothing. LOOKING AHEAD I'm gonna be a bit more strict about the deadline this time around. (But I *may* be set up to capture clips during the party for the *following* year's party. Give me time to figure that one out.) The main new feature will be actual prizes given out in association with all the awards. And a couple of new awards. Again, there may not be a winner in every category, but I want to reward those who do work to bring clips that meet some specific criteria. So, our current awards: Audience Award plus: Audience Award - Silver (2nd place) So get me your clips. My place or yours.
